Simon Fox, our new Swadlincote manager has a varied and impressive background in the motor industry. Working at various dealerships during his career, he has a wealth of knowledge and is a fantastic asset to the team.
ETS: So Simon, what made you choose to work in the motor industry?
SF: I have always had a passion for mechanical engineering and a fascination with how things worked. Having a career in the motor industry was an early ambition and is something I continue to enjoy.
ETS: Tell us how long have you worked for Eden Tyres & Servicing?
SF: Just over 4 ½ years
ETS: How has your career progressed?
SF: I left school at 16 and began my apprenticeship at an independent motor engineers. After I’d finished my apprenticeship, I moved to a Vauxhall main dealership as I knew this would be a great environment to develop my skills and further my learning. It was whilst I was at Vauxhall that I qualified as an MOT Tester and worked my way up to the role of Master technician. I then diversified more into the customer service side of things by taking on the role of workshop controller, followed by service team leader and finally the more supervisory role of PDI Dept Manager. Vauxhall provided a great grounding for my career, enabling me to gain experience using the latest technology and also get valuable customer service training.
I then left Vauxhall for my first role at Eden Tyres & Servicing, working as a Service Technician at their main Derby branch. After a couple of years at ETS I was offered a role at a Mercedes main dealership which I thought was too good an opportunity to miss so I left to work at Mercedes as a Service and Diagnostics Technician. However, it wasn’t long before I missed the family atmosphere at ETS and so I returned to the company as an MOT tester & Service technician working at their Ashby branch. I’m so glad I returned as had I not, I might not have applied for this role as the manager at the new Swadlincote branch.
ETS: Why did you choose to work for Eden Tyres & Servicing?
SF: ETS has a strong reputation within the motor trade for being an excellent family run business. A few of my colleagues had started working for ETS and had very positive things to say about the company, enforcing my belief that I’d like to be part of that family.
As a family business, ETS are very supportive and definitely have that family feel; what sets them apart is that they’re also very forward thinking. They are always looking for ways to stay at the top of the game and I think it’s these high standards that have enabled them to expand so rapidly and successfully in recent years. I knew that working for ETS would provide me with a secure job which is obviously a very important factor for me and my family.
ETS: What do you most enjoy about your job and your work in the service and repair sector?
SF: I most enjoy the variation and that every day and every customer and their needs are different. Eden is great to work for as advising customers honestly is their top priority and they don’t believe in ‘pushy sales’ tactics and selling customers things they don’t need. It’s more important that customers trust our advice which is a brilliant environment to work in, and is unfortunately quite rare in this industry.
ETS: How do you think ETS differs from other garages offering similar services?
SF: I think the honesty, reliability & transparency that ETS strive to provide are what make us different from the rest. The way the new branches are designed with the bright clean reception areas and clean, modern workshops really does set them apart from what most people think of as a ‘typical garage’.
All the branches are very female/child friendly too which hopefully makes a welcome change in this industry.
ETS: What are your career highlights?
SF: Becoming Branch manager @ Swadlincote
I also once won a fly / drive experience whilst working at Vauxhall and got a chance to fly a 4 seater airplane and a helicopter!
