Why is my air-con warm?

Every summer when the weather gets warmer we have lots of customers contacting us with the same question “ why is my air con warm?” Finding your air-con warm is distressing, especially in a heatwave!

Thankfully though, getting air con back to being icy-cold & fresh is usually quick & fairly straightforward. However there are a few reasons why it may have lost it’s cool.

Why is my air-con blowing warm air?

There could be a number of reasons why your air con may be blowing out hot air. Over time, vehicle air conditioning systems can lose efficiency due to refrigerant leaks, clogged filters, and worn out seals. However the the main and most likely reason for your AC not working is that the AC system is low on refrigerant.

It could be low beacuse:

It’s ready for an air con regas
The AC system has a leak

Refrigerant is a special type of gas that has been compressed into liquid which gives the unit its cooling ability. When this is low the AC system doesn’t have enough power to function.

When your refrigerant is low you need to book your vehicle in for an air con “regas” or “recharge”. Air conditioning regasing involves evacuating the refrigerant gas from your air conditioning, testing for leakages, then re-filling and pressurising the system.

Most manufacturers recommend an AC regas every 1-2 years so it’s advisable to think of servicing your air-conditioning system in a similar way to servicing your vehicle.

• Most vehicle need an AC regas every 1-2 years
• Low refrigerant is the most common reason for AC not working
• An AC regas removes old gas, tests for leaks then refils & pressurises the system

The best way to get ice-cold air-conditioning

When your car feels as hot as an oven you need to cool it down FAST! Presuming the system has enough refrigerant and is working properly, here’s the best way to get is as cool as possible, as quickly as possible:

Skip the remote start – a stationary car won’t cool efficiency and you’ll just waste fuel or charge if you own an EV.
Get moving – air-conditioning works much better when your car is on the move! The faster your engine turns, the quicker the AC compressor runs. This makes the AC system cool more effectively. Don’t waste your time or fuel using the AC until you’re ready to go!

To cool down quickly, once you’re on the move you should:

Turn on your AC
Open all windows for about 15 seconds
Put your AC blower on high. Once you feel cold air coming through the vents, roll up your front windows.
Leaving your rear windows slightly open for another 15 seconds or so helps pull the cold air to the back of the car.
Once all windows are up, set your AC to your preferred temperature & speed.
If you’re alone or have just a single passenger in the front – make sure your air-recirculation button is turned on. However, if you have passengers in the rear, circulating the air too make can make the cabin stuffy so you may want to turn the air recirculation button off.
If your car has an auto Stop/Start function, it’s best to switch it off on boiling hot days. Although it’s designed to save fuel, it will also switch off the compressor when you stop which isn’t what you want!
Lastly, make sure your pollen filter is in good condition. Having an old, dirty filter prevents optimal air flow – stopping you from enjoying cool, fresh AC.

How to keep car air-con cold

Regular maintenance is incredibly important when it comes to keeping your car’s air conditioning system in good health. So many drivers completely forget about their AC during the colder months. Using it throughout the year really does help ensure it stays in good working order and alerts you to any potential problems before a heatwave arrives and you desperately need it.

A few ways you can keep the AC system in good working order are:

Run your car air conditioning once a week. This is especially important in winter as regularly running your air conditioning will maintain your refrigerant gas pressure. Once summer comes along, your air conditioning will be better prepared for those hot summer days.
Use your AC to demist your windows throughout the year. Not only does this keep the system in good working order, it also works more quickly to clear your windscreen than a heater in cold weather.
Use your vehicle air-recirculation button in hot weather. This will cool your cabin down more quickly and put less strain on your air-conditioning system.

How does car air-con work?

Your car air conditioning system is made up of five key components:

Compressor
Condensor
Expansion valve
Receiver
Evaporator

So here’s what actually happens when you switch your air-con on:

Inside the air conditioning system is a compressor, which is where the refrigerant is stored.
When the air con is switched on, the gas travels to a condenser. Fresh air from outside the vehicle then passes over the condenser and cools the gas down. This is when the gas liquefies.
Once a liquid, a drier removes any impurities from the liquid before it reaches the thermal expansion valve. This is what allows the driver to control the temperature by limiting the flow of liquid.
Lastly, this liquid is turned into vapour as it travels through the evaporation coils and is blown into the vehicle as cool air.
Now back as a gas, the refrigerant then returns to the compressor to start the process again.

Why does air-con need gas?

Your car air con system has multiple components, but it is the refrigerant that is key to the smooth running of the system. The refrigerant helps create the cool air and without it, the system would not operate. It is a crucial component for a working system as it absorbs heat from the environment and converts it into a cool air flow when combined with the other components of the AC.

If your air conditioning system is low on refrigerant it will be far less efficient and will have to work much harder, putting a strain on your engine and use more fuel.

You are also likely to see a significant decline in the performance of the system as well as noticing an increase in the amount of time it takes to demist your windscreen in the winter months.

If your air-con runs out of gas completely it simply won’t operate and you may hear an echoing sound coming through the vents as it struggles to work. The compressor would shut down in order to prevent further severe damage taking place.

What air-con regas does my car need?

There are two different types of air conditioning regas services available to book. Which air-con regas you need will depend on the age of your vehicle and which gas it’s AC system needs.

The two different AC refrigerants or “gases” used are:

• R134A which is the standard recharge gas
• R1234YF which is the new generation recharging gas

R134A air-con gas

The standard R134A is used for vehicles made before 2017 has been used for over 20 years. However, in recent year it’s been found to be extremely damaging for the environment and a contributing factor in the destruction of the ozone layer.

Although we can still use this gas on older AC systems, we have to take measures to help reduce any damage. All our air-con technicians are F-gas registered & fully trained to prevent the R134A gas escaping into the atmosphere during the re-gassing process. It’s for this reason that a nitrogen test is carried out prior to a recharge on any system that contains no gas or that we suspect may have a leak.

R1234YF air-con gas

All vehicles manufactured after 2017 (& a few models prior) have AC systems that require the new R1234YF gas to operate.

This gas has been introduced for new vehicles as it is far less damaging to the ozone layer. Unfortunately it is more expensive to purchase but is the only gas suitable for cars manufactured after 2017. We offer the R1234YF air-con regas in a number of our branches which can be booked online at the cost of £117.95.

What tyres are best in the rain?

Here in the UK, we’re seeing more rain than ever before. On average, we get at least 1mm of rain for 156 days of the year – so 43% of the time we’re driving on wet roads! It’s therefore understandable that you might be searching for what tyres are best in the rain. In fact, choosing tyres that have good wet grip is essential if you live in the UK.

Best tyres for UK climate

So why are we getting so much rain; the answer quite simply is down to climate change.

Unfortunately most of us have already experienced the effects of climate change in the UK. We’re getting warmer, wetter winters and more frequent extreme weather events such as torrential rain and flooding.

Rain and wet roads have a huge impact on road safety; Highways England warned drivers that “When it Rains, it Kills” after sharing statistics which showed people are 30 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured on the roads in rain than in snow.

The dangers of wet roads are due to a number of factors, one of the most important being how surface water impacts tyre grip, increasing stopping distances and the risk of aquaplaning.

Choosing tyres specifically designed for wet weather will really help keep you safe. Rain tyres such as the Uniroyal RainSport 5 have inbuilt technology designed to channel away surface water giving you reliable grip on rainy roads.

Tyres with the best wet grip

Selecting tyres that have the best wet grip is made easier with the EU Tyre Label. Tyres which have an A-rating for wet grip have been proven to have the shortest stopping distances when tested on wet surfaces.

All tyres are rated from A-G on Wet Grip, Fuel Economy and Noise.

As wet grip is related to safety, it is arguably the most important factor to consider when looking for a new tyre. The wet grip rating does impact stopping distance with a G-rated tyre taking an extra 18 meters to stop on a wet surface than an A-rated tyre.

What is a safe tread depth for rain?

The amount of tread you have on your tyres has a dramatic effect on how much grip they provide, especially in wet conditions. As the grooves in your tread are designed to channel away surface water, as the tread wears down they get shallower and less effective. Having worn tyres impacts grip, handling and stopping distances.

When tested on wet roads at 50 mph, tyres worn down to the legal limit of 1.6mm take an extra 10 meters to stop when compared to new tyres. It’s therefore recommended to replace tyres with less than 3 mm of tread, especially if you’re driving in wet conditions.

You can check if your tyres have less than 3 mm of tread with a 20 pence coin. Simply insert the coin into the tread, if you’re able to see the band around the coin your tyres have less than 3 mm and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Rain Tyres

Rain tyres, also known as wet-weather tyres are a type of tyre specifically designed to provide optimal performance and safety in wet or rainy conditions. These tyres are engineered with several features that enable them to maintain grip on wet surfaces:

Tread Pattern Rain tyres have a tread pattern designed to disperse water away from the tyre’s contact patch. The grooves and channels in the tread allow water to be dispersed very quickly, preventing hydroplaning and maintaining contact between the tyre and the road surface.
Compound The rubber compound used in rain tyres is formulated to maintain flexibility and grip in wet conditions. It is often softer than the compound used in standard summer tyres, providing better traction on wet surfaces.
Wider Contact Patch Rain tyres may have a wider contact patch compared to standard tyres. This helps distribute the vehicle’s weight over a larger area, improving traction on wet surfaces.
Reduced Stiffness Rain tyres are often designed to be more supple than standard tyres. This allows them to conform better to the road surface, increasing the amount of rubber in contact with the road and improving traction.
