Preparing your car for a spring road trip

With the weather warmer and the chill of winter well and truly gone, it’s safe to say spring has finally arrived. Now is the perfect time to plan a spring road trip with your friends or family, but there are some checks you can make beforehand to ensure things run smoothly. Simple checks and basic maintenance can prevent any disasters from occurring, though there are specific parts of your vehicle you should attend to before leaving.

We’ve put together some top tips to ensure you have a fun and safe road trip this spring without any unwanted breakdowns or accidents.

Battery and fluids

Battery

Take a look at your battery by checking the amount of fluid within it. Your battery is going to need to be fully charged in order to sustain a long road trip. If your battery fails when you’re away from home, you’re going to need to locate a garage and purchase a new one.

Fluids

When you check the fluid in your car battery and brakes, take the time to check other important fluids in your vehicle. You should ensure your engine oil is at a full level before you leave for a long trip. You will also want to check transmission and antifreeze fluid levels.

Brakes and tyre pressure

Brakes

Brakes are arguably one of the most important aspects of your vehicle, ensuring safety on road trips no matter how long or short. Brakes that are faulty can be problematic during longer trips. Check the pressure and fluid of your brakes to ensure they are working exactly as they should be.

Tyre pressure

Flat tyres are one of the most common reasons a breakdown will occur on a long road trip. Checking the tyre pressure is not only a legal requirement, but it can also ensure they don’t fail or result in a blowout. However, this isn’t the only benefit to having the correct tyre pressure, and you can read a previous blog post we wrote about this here.

Smaller parts of your vehicle are important too, and they can result in problems whilst you’re out on the road. Before you leave for your trip, check your windows, windscreen wipers and all lights are working as they should be. Getting caught out mid-journey will only cause more issues.

With some simply checks you will ensure your road trip is a success. All smooth journeys begin with preparation, and these checks need to be made to ensure you will be safe on the road.
