Why it’s worth fitting Winter Tyres, even if it doesn’t snow!

Have you ever fitted Winter Tyres to your vehicle? Are you apprehensive about spending the money in case it doesn’t snow this Winter?

Fitting specialist Winter Tyres during the colder months is a guaranteed way of giving you greater grip and better control of your vehicle, ensuring you remain safer in cold conditions, even if it doesn’t snow!

Winter Tyres continue to keep drivers safe on the roads as soon as temperatures hit 7 degrees or lower.

In standard tyres, the compound used hardens when temperatures get this low, causing them to lose grip. With winter tyres, this is avoided, as they contain more natural rubber and advanced silica. They also contain small slits in the tread blocks named ‘sipes’, which are created to give the extra grip needed in colder conditions. Fitting winter tyres has even been made a legal requirement in many countries to avoid unnecessary accidents- in the UK alone, there are up to 6500 more accidents on the roads in the winter months.

Last year, we teamed up with Continental Tyres, The Nottingham Panthers and The National Ice Centre to test just what difference Winter Tyres make to driving in cold conditions.  We conducted a series of tests on Ice! Take a look for yourself and see how winter tyres compare to standard summer tyres in cold conditions.

Winter tyres have been proven to guarantee a much better grip in all cold weather conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, snow, ice, mud and wet conditions that wreak havoc on the UK roads throughout the colder months! In conditions like snow and ice especially, winter tyres can help to shorten your stopping distance. A car fitted with winter tyres travelling at a safe speed of 20mph in icy or snowy situations will come to a halt an average of 11 metres sooner than a car fitted with standard tyres. You’ll also find you have more control when driving a car fitted with winter tyres; winter tyres improve the overall stability and steering of your car, perfect for when the roads are icy and our cars are prone to skidding.

If you live in a remote area away from main roads where winter conditions tend to be worse for a longer period of time, winter tyres will be of a greater advantage to you, although they are advised to all. Buying winter tyres before the cold weather hits is the best way to ensure you are ready for the seasonal conditions; many drivers change to their winter tyres from as early as October, and tend to leave them fitted right through till March.

Winter tyres are not obligatory in the United Kingdom, so if you choose to stick with standard tyres this winter, make sure you do some thorough checks before you head out on the roads. Check your tyres are in a good condition- the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, but around 3mm at least is advised. Have a good look over each tyre for any signs of possible damage to the tread or sidewalls, as this could result in tyre failure making your car even harder to control in winter conditions. If you have any issues with your existing tyres, get them looked over by a professional right away.
